Trinity Blood

2006-03-05

Trinity Blood is classic Gonzo: fun and stylish, but lacking substance. That's a shame, too, because the show had real promise at the start.

Chobits

2006-02-18

I really enjoyed watching Chobits, though I can't easily explain why. It's a well-executed romance with likeable characters, but what's really refreshing is that Chobits doesn't rely on the ridiculous confusions and misunderstandings that drive too many romantic comedies, nor on random coincidences interrupting the revelation of important plot information (Cardcaptor Sakura, I'm looking at you). Or maybe it's just that Chii is really cute.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

2006-02-07

My initial impression of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha was, "this is exactly what you'd get if unskillful men tried to duplicate Cardcaptor Sakura." By the time I finished the series, though, that impression had improved significantly. The show is a bit formulaic, and the quality of its artwork is inconsistent (the onsen episode was particularly bad); but on balance it's still worth watching.

Futakoi Alternative

2006-01-24

All the cool kids are watching it, but does Futakoi Alternative measure up? In a word, yes. It's not a masterpiece by any means, but it is definitely good. More importantly, pictures!

Planetes

2005-12-21

I can't believe I took so long to get around to watching Planetes. It has all I could have hoped for: engaging, lovable characters brought to life by top-notch voice acting; a compelling plot that hits all the right notes; a novel and realistic sci-fi setting; a fantastic soundtrack; and an ending that feels just right.

Berserk

2005-12-05

Berserk: Excellent.
Berserk's ending: WTF.

That is all.

Tales of Symphonia

2005-10-25

I played Tales of Symphonia some time ago, and it's about time I wrote something about it. Let's cut to the chase: Tales of Symphonia is good, but not great. The word that comes to mind is solid— it's no Legend of Zelda, but overall I enjoyed Tales of Symphonia quite a bit.

Full Moon wo Sagashite

2005-09-04

I recently started watching Full Moon wo Sagashite because of a certain strong recommendation, and I was not disappointed. The show does start out a bit childishly, but right around second season the shit hits the fan, and it's then that Full Moon wo Sagashite really starts to shine.

Kingdom Hearts

2005-07-15

I haven't given games enough love on this site, and I'm going to start changing that by talking about one of my favorite games since Super Smash Bros. Melee, and my favorite RPG since Grandia II. Yes, I'm talking about Kingdom Hearts, the 2002 Squaresoft/Disney hybrid.

Azumanga Daioh

2005-06-24

So, Azumanga Daioh was pretty much the perfect thing to watch after the brain-fuck that was Neon Genesis Evangelion. (Well, perfect for inducing acute cognitive dissonance, anyway.) Also, episode 16 contained quite possibly the cutest thing I have ever seen.

Chiyo-chan in penguin suit

Fear the Chiyo-chan!

Screenshots don't really do it justice, though. I must find a plush Chiyo-chan peguin...
